Single-crop farming

Jungle was yesterday. In the past decade the import of palm oil to Germany has almost trippled. According to the EEG-Monitoring of the German Biomass research center, a total of 385 million liters of palm oil have been used to create heat and electricity in German cogeneration power plants in 2009. This amount of imported oil requires a palm oil plantation of the size of 110.000 hectares, which equals the size of the living habitat of some 1000 orangutans. Palm oil producers for Germany are Indonesia, Columbia, Malaysia and Papa Neuginea.

Our politicians are more concerned with encouraging the economy's and consumers' spending habits than in saving energy and conserving the environment - for humans and animals, alike.
